But today I am going to bask in the glory of breastfeeding in celebration of World Breastfeeding Week which coincidentally coincides with my one year breastfeeding anniversary!
I made the decision to breastfeed while I was pregnant. I took classes, read books, bought supplies. But in my opinion nothing can ready you for nursing your baby better than your natural maternal instincts. I found it stressful and counterproductive listening to the often conflicting advice of doctors, midwives, lactation consultants, and other moms. Once I relaxed and let my body do what it was biologically built to do I was able to nurse Marlie successfully and beyond the standard six months. I also gained the confidence to deflect questions about why I was nursing her for so long (as if I am volunteering to extend my prison sentence rather than opt for early release).
I admit that nursing has not always been easy, but overall it has been a positive experience for Marlie and me. For me the bonding and gratification from knowing that I am giving her the best nourishment that money can't buy far outweighs the difficulties. This is why I breastfeed.

Way to go Teresha! I am still breastfeeding Orlaith 7 1/2 months in. I have no plans to stop any time soon. She enjoys nursing, it is a great nutritional source for her and the bonding time is invaluable. She will let me know when she is ready to wean, and that will be my signal. NOT all of the people who look at me cross eyed when they find out I am still nursing!
Awww,,,,what a sweet picture! Love it.
